General Pest Control

With over 200 sunny days a year, the Baton Rouge area attracts over ten million tourists annually. However, our sub-tropical climate draws in many visitors who stay, multiply, thrive, spread disease, and cause sleepless nights. They don’t make reservations, and once they arrive, they have no plans to leave. They are bugs, and their numbers put the number of human visitors to shame. Louisiana ranks as the 2nd buggiest state, and on average in the US, our homes have 100 different species of the pests. What does that mean for us? If you think about how many individual bugs per species there may be, you might want to put CheckMate Termite & Pest Management on speed dial, (225) 270-0788.

As diverse as our culture is here, so are the types of pests. They can fly, crawl, run, play dead, and bring out our primal fears. Some of them never sleep and are very intelligent, and it’s a battle that should be fought year-round. Here are some of the common offenders in our area:

Spiders: It is estimated that there are about 3 million spiders per person worldwide, and about 62 living in our homes right now. Baton Rouge is home to a diverse bunch, including the big and fast Wolf, the Gray Wall Jumper, and the ever-dangerous Brown Recluse and Black and Brown Widows. They are an apex predator in the bug world and finding them in your home or business can be a sign that there are other bugs as well.

Black Flies: Unlike spiders who prefer to remain unnoticed, the Buffalo Gnat is typically a constant annoyance source. They are blood-feeders and try to crawl into our noses, ears, and eyes. This is one pest that likes the cooler weather, so they flourish at the end of winter and early spring. When the warm weather comes, they will be gone, but not really. The eggs that are laid in the spring will come to life the following spring.

Stink Bugs: Talk about the gift that keeps on giving, threaten one of these, and you’ll be living with a smell described as being skunk-like or rotten cilantro for a while. Squash one and you find many more attracted to the area. Luckily, they don’t pose a threat to people (just your nose), but they can do a number on your plants. This is another bug whose eggs hatch the following season.

Buck Moth Caterpillar: They are one of the more fearsome-looking pests. Their backs are covered in spikes, and barely a touch of one and the venom they hold can result in a very painful experience. What makes them troubling is that in the moth stage, they lay eggs in trees. When the eggs hatch and the caterpillars emerge, they can fall to the ground and potentially land on a person.
