Baton Rouge, Lousiana

Baton Rouge, LA

With over 224,000 people, Baton Rouge, the capital city of Louisiana, is the second most heavily populated city in the state, after New Orleans, and the 100th most populated city in America since 2019. A city of rich cultural and historical importance, The Baton Rouge area is located on the Istrouma Bluff. It is the first natural bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta at the Gulf of Mexico. The location allowed for a business district that was not at risk of flooding during the heavy seasonal rains.

The city also built a levee system reaching from the bluff southward to protect the riverfront and agricultural areas. It has been under the rule of seven different governments in its tumultuous history; the French, colonial Spanish, British, Republic of West Florida (as a U.S. territory and state), Confederate, and United States again after the Civil War.

Besides a rich melting pot of cultures from around the world, Baton Rouge is also a hotbed of industrial growth and development. With a thriving economy in several sectors, the city is a major medical, motion picture, technology, petrochemical, and research center of the South. Multiple prestigious universities have campuses here, including Louisiana State University, the largest higher-education institution in the state, and the flagship university of the LSU system. Southern University, the flagship institute of its system as well is here, and it belongs to the Southern University System, the only historically black college system in the country.

With its vast economic opportunity, great school system, and low cost of living, the city is a great place to live. With the economy being boosted by such corporations as Lamar Advertising Company, Piccadilly Restaurants, Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, ExxonMobil, and Dow Chemical Company, there is plenty of work for locals, and those who commute there daily.

We need to have some fun as well, and Baton Rouge residents have no shortage in that department. From historical attractions to fun outings, this city is sure to have something for everyone. The harbor is home to the USS Kidd, a decommissioned United States Destroyer-class ship that has been named a National Historic Site and converted into a museum. It is close to the LSU Rural Life Museum, which provides exhibits and plenty of information and a unique look into life in the region's interesting history. The Baton Rouge Zoo is a great way to spend a day with the family, and the Blue Bayou Water Park is sure to excite even the most demanding of thrill-seekers.
